A ridge vent is a continuous strip of venting that runs along the peak of your roof, hidden under a cap of shingles. It’s the exhaust half of your attic’s breathing system, and on most homes here it’s the right choice.
It’s also the piece most likely to be installed in a way that quietly does nothing. A ridge vent with no intake underneath it doesn’t move air. A ridge vent sharing an attic with turbines or a powered fan can actually move air the wrong way.
Here’s what a ridge vent does, what it needs to work, and the two installation mistakes that turn a correctly specified vent into decoration.
What does a ridge vent actually do?
It lets hot, humid air escape at the highest point of the attic so cooler air can be drawn in low at the eaves. That loop is the entire system. Hot air rises out through the ridge, and replacement air enters through the soffits, which keeps the attic closer to outdoor temperature instead of baking well above it.

Ridge vents win on most homes for a simple reason. They exhaust along the entire ridge line rather than at a few points, so the attic empties evenly instead of leaving dead pockets between vents.
Why a ridge vent fails without soffit intake
Air has to come from somewhere. If the soffits are blocked, painted over, or were never vented, the ridge vent has no supply, and a vent with no supply moves almost nothing.
Worse, it can start pulling from inside the house. When the attic can’t draw air from the eaves, the path of least resistance becomes gaps around light fixtures, the attic hatch, and duct penetrations. Now you’re exhausting conditioned air you paid to cool, and the attic still isn’t ventilating properly.

Insulation is the other common blocker. Blown insulation pushed out over the top plate seals the intake path from the inside. Baffles exist to hold that channel open, and they get skipped.
The mistake that makes ventilation worse
Mixing exhaust types in one attic.
GAF is direct about this. Installing two or more different types of exhaust vents within the same attic space can short-circuit proper airflow. Instead of drawing from the soffits, the ridge vent starts pulling air from the nearest other exhaust vent, and a section of the attic stops ventilating entirely.
Powered fans are the sharper version of the same problem. GAF’s guidance on planning a balanced attic ventilation system is that a powered attic vent should never be mixed with ridge vents or other non powered exhaust vents. The fan overwhelms the passive system and reverses the intended flow.
You see this on local roofs after piecemeal work. Somebody adds a turbine because the upstairs is hot, then a reroof adds a ridge vent, and nobody removes the turbine. The homeowner now has more vents and less ventilation.
How is a ridge vent installed?
A slot gets cut through the decking along both sides of the ridge, the vent is fastened over the opening, and a ridge cap of shingles goes over the top so it reads as a normal peak. The cut is the part that matters.
Two details separate a working install from a cosmetic one. The slot has to actually be cut, at the right width, and it has to stop short of the ends rather than running through to the edge. A ridge vent laid over an uncut or partially cut ridge is a strip of plastic under shingles.
Baffling matters too. External baffles on the vent deflect wind over the opening, which both improves draw and keeps wind driven rain from being pushed in. In a climate where rain arrives sideways, that’s not a small feature.
If you’re having a roof replaced, this is worth a specific question rather than an assumption. Edge and peak details are exactly the kind of thing that gets skipped on a thin bid, the same way drip edge gets skipped at the eaves.
Ridge vent, turbine, or box vents?
Ridge vents suit most homes with a decent run of continuous ridge. Turbines move more air per unit and make sense on roofs with short or broken ridge lines where a continuous vent can’t work. Box vents, the low profile squares, are the fallback when neither fits well.
The rule that actually governs the choice is that you pick one exhaust type and use it throughout. A short ridge with turbines beats a long ridge vent fighting two turbines.
Roof shape decides more than preference does. Complex rooflines with hips, dormers, and multiple planes often can’t support enough continuous ridge, which is a legitimate reason to use something else.
Why it matters more in our heat
Attic temperature drives three things here: your cooling bill, how fast your shingles age from underneath, and whether moisture has a chance to sit. A poorly ventilated attic bakes the underside of the deck all summer, and that heat load is part of why asphalt roofs finish earlier here than the shingle package suggests.
It also interacts with the leak picture. Trapped moisture condenses, drips, and stains a ceiling in a way that looks exactly like a roof leak without any water coming through the roof at all. Diagnosing that as a leak leads to a repair that fixes nothing.
Ventilation isn’t the exciting part of a roof. It’s the part that decides how long the exciting parts last.
What to do next
Three things worth remembering. A ridge vent only works if the soffits can supply it, so intake comes first. Never mix exhaust types in one attic, because two kinds short-circuit each other and a powered fan overrides the passive system entirely.
