Drip edge is a strip of bent metal that runs along the eaves and rakes of your roof, tucked under the shingles and over the fascia. It costs very little, it takes a crew almost no time to install, and leaving it off will quietly rot the wood behind your gutters.
It’s also one of the easiest things for a cheap bid to skip, because you can’t see it from the ground once the gutters are hung. That combination, low cost and low visibility, is exactly why it’s worth understanding before you sign a roofing contract.
Here’s what it does, why code calls for it, the installation mistake we correct most often, and how to check whether your roof actually has it.
What does drip edge actually do?
It controls where water leaves the roof. Without it, water clings to the underside of the shingle edge and runs backward onto the fascia board and behind the gutter instead of dropping cleanly into it. That’s surface tension doing what surface tension does, and metal is what breaks it.
The strip also protects the exposed edge of the roof deck. Deck edges are end grain plywood, which drinks water faster than any other part of the roof. Once that edge goes soft, the fascia goes with it, and the gutter it holds starts pulling away.
So a part that costs a few dollars a foot is protecting the wood your entire gutter system hangs on.
Is drip edge required by code?

Practically, that means a roof installed without drip edge can fail inspection. It can also create a problem later with warranty or insurance, because the install did not meet code.

It sounds like a small detail and it defeats the entire point. When the gutter sits below the metal, runoff slips behind the gutter and lands on the fascia, which is the exact wood the drip edge exists to protect. The correct relationship is simple. Drip edge goes on first, over the underlayment at the rakes and under it at the eaves depending on the detail, and the gutter tucks underneath so runoff drops into the trough rather than behind it.

How do you check whether your roof has it?
Look at the edge of the roof from the ground with the gutter in view. You’re looking for a thin metal lip visible between the bottom course of shingles and the top of the gutter. On a rake edge, the gable side without a gutter, it’s easier to see: a metal strip running down the slope under the shingle edge.
Two signs it’s missing or wrong. Peeling paint or dark staining on the fascia directly behind the gutter, and water dripping from behind the gutter rather than through it during a rain.
If your roof was installed recently and you can’t find it, ask for the inspection paperwork. A permitted job gets checked at the deck and final stages, and that documentation should exist.
What are the different types?
Three profiles cover most residential work. Type C, an L shaped piece, is the traditional and simplest. Type D, sometimes called D metal or T style, has a lower flange that kicks water further from the fascia, which is why many roofers prefer it. Type F, with a longer top flange, is generally used over existing shingles or where a rake needs more coverage.

For most local homes this isn’t a decision worth agonizing over. What matters is that it’s there, that it’s continuous, and that the gutter sits underneath it.
Why it matters more in our climate
Two reasons. Our sun degrades sealants and edge details faster than a milder climate does, so the mechanical detail carries more of the load over time. And when the rain arrives here it tends to arrive hard, which is exactly when water volume overwhelms a poorly detailed edge.
A roof edge that handles a light shower fine can push water behind the gutter in a downpour. That pattern is the same one behind most roof leaks that only show up in heavy rain, and the edge detail is a common contributor.
